A Review Of The Canon PowerShot SX40 HS

Looking for a great, high megapixel camera that will meet practically all of your everyday photography needs? Well, look no further than the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS. This camera looks great and you could mistake it for a D-SLR camera. What's really incredible about the SX40 HS is its long 35x zoom range, coupled with that 12-megapixel camera resolution. Yes, you read that right - a 35x zoom range - which translates to a very powerful camera with telephoto reach. Read on and find out more about it.

Nikon Zoom Camera

1. Design and Construction

What does the SX40 HS look like? Well, as you can see from the picture, the unit itself is neither compact nor light. Its dimensions are 3.6 by 4.8 by 4.2 inches (HWD) and it weighs in at 1.3 pounds. It's competitor, the Nikon Coolpix P500 is slimmer and lighter by comparison.

Nikon Zoom Camera

The Canon PowerShot SX40 HS comes with a metal body with a few plastic elements. I like the fact that there's a very deep handgrip which lets you hold the camera firmly. Throw in the SX40's optical stabilization system and it means you can get a sharp photo at the extreme end of its zoom range. I tried zooming almost 35x on the SX40 HS, without a tripod or monopod, and my pictures still came out pretty good and sharp.

2. Optics and Resolution

When it comes to long range zoom, very few non-digital SLR type cameras can match the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS. The 35x zoom range is better than many digital SLRs equipped with telephoto lenses and is certainly one of the selling points of the camera.

With its 12 megapixel resolution, you'd expect that photos taken with the SX40 HS to be exceptionally sharp. Incidentally, I got to know about the Imatest software suite - which can be used to measure cameras' performance in terms of image sharpness and noise. So here's what I did - to evaluate sharpness, I shot several photos of a test chart and analyzed them using a center-weighted algorithm. The SX40 HS averaged 1,836 lines per picture height, which surpasses the 1,800-line benchmark that qualifies an image as being acceptably sharp.

I've tried many cameras in the past, including the Kodak EasyShare Max Z990 which packs a 30x zoom lens, records a slightly higher 1,946 lines. So in terms of image sharpness, the SX40 HS is not the best - but I think its other features more than make up for that.

3. User Controls

Many cameras have very obscure or weird control placements. The Canon PowerShot SX40 HS doesn't have this problem. There are ample control buttons on the SX40's body - a top-mounted dial lets you change between shooting modes, and there's a neat rear four-way jog wheel to scroll through menus, adjust ISO, set exposure compensation, activate the self-timer, and so forth.

The Canon designers obviously got the design of the menu system correct. In fact, the Canon SX40 HS menu system is one of the best I've seen around - comparable even to the top end DSLR cameras. You can quickly access most of the common controls you'd encounter in a digital camera, without having to click all around menu after menu. I also like the fact that the SX40's pop-up flash is manually operated. All I need to do is flip it up when you'd like to use it. Enthusiasts who want a better flash can fit in units like the Canon Speedlite flash, using the dedicated hot shoe.

4. Battery Life

The Canon PowerShot SX40 boasts a very good and long lasting battery life. I could be outdoors shooting photos like no one's business and the battery would still be OK. This contrasts strongly to some of the older Canon cameras I have, where the battery just dies on you when you're lining up for a very important shot.

5. Storage and Transfer

OK, the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS supports all manner of media cards - Secure Digital, Secure Digital High Capacity and Secure Digital Extended Capacity. The camera records 1080p24 QuickTime video - which in my opinion, looks quite good. To copy photos and video into your PC, you can plug the camera into your computer via mini USB to copy the files. Alternatively, you can connect the camera to an HDTV via mini HDMI. My family loves to do that - plug a digital camera to a huge TV and enjoy the photos and video.

6. Shortcomings

I feel that the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS is a great camera - but it falls short in a few areas. For one thing, the camera isn't cheap! And although it has a powerful 35x zoom lenses, I could tell that it's performance in low light is not so good - especially compared to its competitors like the Nikon Coolpix P500, which captures clean images in as little as one quarter the light as the SX40.

Conclusion

All in all, the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS is a great camera with a powerful 35x zoom range. It has a host of innovative features which allow you to take picture after picture with ease. The quality of the photo shots are way above average and is certainly one of the better digital cameras in its class. Do check it out!

How To Zero A Rifle Scope

You've just got yourself a new rifle scope, fitted it and let me guess...for some reason your shots are landing nowhere near the crosshairs?

Nikon Zoom Camera

Sadly there's more to rifle scope sharp shooting than just plonking the scope on the rifle and forever after shooting like an SAS sniper! You have to "zero" it.

Nikon Zoom Camera

Think about it. It's like a bike wheel. If you tighten the bolts wrong, too much on one side for example, it spins wrong and rubs the brake pads. It's the same with a Rifle scope. If it's not set up correctly it will be offline and even at short air rifle, airsoft and paintball ranges this is going to throw your accuracy right off. At longer ranges you'll miss by a mile (well figuratively anyway!)

What Does "Zero a scope" mean?

Zeroing a sight or scope means getting the crosshair in position so that when you shoot. Ground zero if you like. The point of impact. There's a lot of discussion amongst shooters on the best way to zero a scope or sight. What I've written below is what I've been sending out to my ebay scope buyers for the last year or so and received a lot of good comments back about it so I know it's OK!

How to Zero a Rifle Scope

First of all you need to set a firm foundation by fitting the scope mounts well.

Put the scope mounts on the rifle first with the top brackets removed. Tighten them into place using 1/2 turns at the time so that they sit solid and level as best as is possible, i.e., the downward pressure is as equal as possible. At this stage don't tighten them fully as you might want to slide them up and down a little. Now take scope and place it on top of the open rifle mounts. Make sure the windage and elevation turrets are one up and one to the right (these are the "turrets" on the sight. You use them later to make micro adjustments and in the field adjustments for wind) Then put the top mount brackets on and tighten - Again use partial turns to tighten up. Don't tighten fully at this stage, you may yet need to adjust a little.
Zero the scope

Lie in your normal shooting position and check that you can see through the scope well... The distance between your eye and the rear scope lens is called Eye Relief. Unlike cartoons you do not use a scope by pressing your eye up against the scope lens! Once comfortable complete the screwing down of all mounts so that your set up is solid - take care at this stage to keep the final turns partial and one by one to ensure pressure is equal.
Now it's time to zero the scope for shooting:

Load the rifle Adopt your standard prone/lie down shooting position. Prone is the best way as if you test shoot from standing or kneeling positions you waver more and it's harder to do a "true test". Put some sort of target in place at say 20 yards - or whatever you think your "standard" range will be. Using cross hair on target centre - Take 2-3 shots - Where do do they fall in relation to where you want them to? Right, left, up, down - dead on (lucky you!)
2-3 shots is best as it will average out shooter inaccuracy and give you a more "significant" feel for how far or close you are from true zero.

Now it's time to use the windage and elevation turrets to get it zeroed dead on. These are the 2 turrets on the top and right side of the scope. See my website for pictures.

Models vary, you'll probably screw a cap off and expose either a coin twist or finger knurled type of dial. The top turret adjusts up and down. The right one left and right. If you have your scopes instructions they should have a table with figures to tell you what each click adjustment means in terms of cross hair movement at "x" distance, e.g., 1/8 inch at 100 metres.

Use single click turns and each time take a new shot to gauge where the shot now falls - the dials basically adjust the cross hair position up-down and left-right.

It's trial and error basically but with testing you'll get to where you need to be and be able to trust that your shots will go where it says they will! This may take some time and a lot of shots. Be patient!

Nikon and Canon - Photography Vs Technology

Professional photographers hired to covering demand photo shoots rely entirely on the right camera setup--job specific lenses, one or two dSLR bodies, and plenty of compact flash (CF) cards. For most photographers shooting medium format, Nikon and Canon are the only brands which ever make it into the studio. Both brands offer RAW file capabilities, large sensors, large hi-res LCD monitor, and the highest quality bodies and lenses, which are traits most important to pros. Still, each brand's products have their own distinctive features, advantages and disadvantages.

Nikon Zoom Camera

Nikon has dominated the film photography world since the 1950's and released the world's first digital single lens reflect professional camera, the 2.6 megapixel D1 in 1999. What made Nikon "the modern photographer's camera company" was its versatility and wide choice of autofocus (AF) Nikkor lenses, all of which are compatible with either their 35mm or FX film cameras. At the time of its 50th anniversary, Nikon listed over 60 AF lenses for sale ranging from wide angle lenses with focal lengths as short as 10mm, to telephoto lenses of up to 600mm, and a plethora of zoom lenses.

Nikon Zoom Camera

The Nikon dSLR body is very close to their 35mm bodies, which is a great comfort to long time photographers. While some options have changed, the overall anatomy is the same. Image size has increased almost 1000% since the D1, the D3X shoots 24.5mp images with max resolution of 6048 x 4032p while their Canon competitor, the Mark EOS-1Ds III, comes in at 21mp and max resolution of 5616 x 3744.

More choice of lenses and digital information will cost you, however, as Nikon bodies and lenses are generally more expensive than Canon and are heavier. The D3X weighs in at 00 USD, excluding lenses, and 2-lbs without lens and battery. Nikon does, however, offer lightweight cost effective solutions such as the D70, 80, 90, and 3100 cameras which range from 00-00 and include a standard zoom lens.

Canon has dominated the world of electronics since the 1960's and, like Nikon, is a Japanese-based company. They released their first pro dSLR on year after Nikon's debut and boasted a larger, better image. Consumers were familiar with the brand's point-and-shoot Powershot cameras--which made it on the scene before Nikon's Coolpix line--but professionals hesitated until September of 2001 when reviews boasted how much quieter, lighter, faster, and cheaper Canon's new EOS-D1 was compared to any equal quality Nikon dSLR. They also offered a 16-35mm f/2.8 L USM lens and other options which sought to offset the need for a large variety of lenses.

Since then, the EOS line, specifically the Mark II-III have been prime picks for Canon pro shooters. While Canon has released a Mark IV, this camera weighs in heavier than Nikons D3X at 2.6-lb and offers only 16 effective megapixels. Canon professional bodies are significantly cheaper. The 21mp 1Ds costs less 00 and weighs less than 50-oz. Much of this is because Canon manufactures its sensors and a few other mechanisms in-house, unlike Nikon which mostly outsources its sensors to Sony.

Pro photographers will always consider the type of photography they are shooting. If carrying lots of lenses is impossible and mobility and cost are critical deciding factors, Canon has the versatility they need. Other photographers, however, love studying the science of getting the perfect shot with the best lens, especially when more time is allotted. Getting a new camera system is a huge investment which needs to be tempered with trials, research, and reading reviews from other pros.
