Digital Camera - Definition Of Optical And Digital Zoom

If you just own your very first camera or you just want to know a little bit information related to digital camera then knowing about how 'zoom' works within a digital camera is a good start. There are two types of zoom in digital camera, digital zoom and optical zoom. The digital zoom is a type of zoom where it simply just takes the picture, crops it and enlarges it using an interpolation method. This zoom will not retain the quality of pictures and sometimes even reduce it significantly. The optical zoom works differently. What optical zoom does is it wills physically changes the length of the optical lens on your camera to draw you closer to the subject. This zoom will keep the quality of the pictures.

Which type of zoom you want to use is depends on the situation. For example, if you want to take some pictures and then put it on a social networking websites like Facebook, you probably better off using a digital zoom since most of the websites on the internet always limit the size of the pictures allowed. Another advantage of using a digital zoom is when you want to take pictures discreetly from afar and get closer to the subject, like at a religious or a graduation ceremony. Sacrificing the image quality to capture the moment is more important than no pictures at all. Any photo/image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop can also be used to achieve the same digital zoom effect like the pictures taken from digital cameras.

The optical zoom as explained above is your best bet if you want to take pictures with full details. It has the same effect as if you move closer to the subject and take it from there. Optical zoom lenses physically extend to magnify your subject with a motor controls the lens movement. When you press the switch to "W" or "T", the subject is either magnified or reduced in size. The "W" stands for "wide-angle" (reduce). The "T" stands for "telephoto" (magnify). Unfortunately, not all digital cameras are equipped with an optical lens which give an optical zoom features, and the ones which has it is probably cost more expensive. However, if your goal is printing, then you are advised to seek a camera that has a great optical zoom and turn off the digital zoom. Your pictures will be better in the end, even if they are not close up.
