In the ever changing world of Digital Cameras, zoom and image quality has been reaching new heights. What would be the point if the image blurs or is out of focus? In this article I'll be looking at some of the latest Super Zoom digital camera's to hit the market.

Many so-called "zoom" lenses, particularly in the case of fixed lens cameras, are actually varifocal lenses, which gives lens designers more flexibility in optical design trade-offs (focal length range, maximum aperture, size, weight, cost) than trueparfocal zoom, and which is practical because of auto-focus, and because the camera processor can move the lens to compensate for the change in the position of the focal plane while changing magnification ("zooming"), making operation essentially the same as a true parfocal zoom.

The most desirable aspect of a varifocal fixed lens digital camera therefore is its compact size and weight. Being able to carry a relative small camera with you at ease when going for ex. on a hike is the true appeal of such a camera. Not to mention the fact that they are usually less costly than the parfocal DSLR versions.
The question is: What is important to look for in a super zoom digital camera?
Image stability. When at full zoom, the image should be stabilized by the camera's internal processor as to counter for the normal shaking of the human hand. After all, chances are you bought such a camera for its compactness and you won't have a tripod handy to counter blur. The stabilizer should be sharp and not drift like some models do.
Focus. The camera should focus on the subject at hand and not around the edges. I have found that most super zoom digital cameras tend to struggle with focus in Auto mode. As such, you should look for a camera with the proper manual settings that is not too difficult to understand and easy to master, especially in video recording mode.
Image Quality. Although the image quality will never be as good as a DSLR or a Micro Four Thirds camera, it should still be acceptable enough to take semi-professional quality pictures on any given day. The fact that you won't be paying 00 - 00 for such a camera should make up for the slightly lesser image quality and light exposure that the DSLR versions offer.
I have shopped around and look at many customer reviews in my search for the best Super Zoom fixed lens digital camera out there today. In my quest, I have come across two clear market leaders: The Olympus SP-590UZ and the Canon PowerShot SX30 IS. After a closer inspection, looking at all the desired features mentioned above, also taking many customer reviews into consideration, the Canon PowerShot SX30 IS came out trumps.
The Image Stabilization is astonishingly good, and ISO 800 is tolerable with ISO 400 being very usable. The Zoom Range is incredible, not even a high priced pro-camera can match it - as a single walk-about lens, this is the one that gets the job done!
